UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has acknowledged and recognized the hard work initiated by the government of Myanmar by holding genuine dialogues and ask for the participation of various political parties in helping the reform process for the benefit of the country, said news report from IANS.
According to UN spokesman Martin Nesirky, the statement was issued by the UN Secretary General right after his meeting with the parliamentary delegation of Myanmar spearheaded by the speaker of the lower house Thura Shwe Mann.
The National League for Democracy, the Union Solidarity and Development Party, the Unity and Democracy Party of Kachin State were among the lists of other parliamentarians representing different political parties in Myanmar that joined in the meeting.
During the meeting held at the UN Headquarters in New York, he further added that the parliament plays a very vital role in the development and achievement of national reconciliation and also the support and cooperation of all political parties in the country. He also stressed on the reform that includes legislation on facilitating economic, social and political progress, the report said.
To be able to achieve and protect these goals, there is a need to look at the root causes of communal violence, assuring the fundamental rights of ethnic and religious minorities to be highly respected, and to give justice to those who were victimized and have the perpetrators face the law.
