AusAID plans Direct Aid to Myanmar government

Myanmar being isolated for two and a half decades may soon get direct developmental aid funds from Australia, said news report from ABC.

At present, aids given by the Australian government to Myanmar are channeled to multilateral groups such as the non-government organisations and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

According to Australian AID Director-General Peter Baxter there are new plans to work directly with the Myanmar government.

However, he further added that careful planning is needed if direct aid for Myanmar pushes through. For the past 12 months, huge number of visitors took a visit to Myanmar and there has been a willingness to increase levels of assistance from current low levels.

In the Education sector, scholarship program started two years ago a key to the progress of the country.

The expertise of some trained people with regards to dealing with the government and its pertinent issues are very much needed in the country.

On the other hand, AusAID staff in Burma has increased. Their main role is to monitor and do actual visitations on the programs to be undertaken and are being funded and to make certain that they are being delivered properly.

Reports says that Australian aid to Myanmar stands at US$64.2 million this year, rising to US$82.8 million in 2013-14, the report said. Original source: http://www.betweenonline.com/2013/06/25/ausaid-plans-direct-aid-to-myanmar-government/
