President of Shan Nationalities Democratic Party (SNDP) Sai Ai Pao disclosed that the most western countries practice Proportional Representation (PR) system however this is not applicable for Myanmar because of its present political condition and most of the people living there are not yet ready, said news report from SHAN.
Some of the reasons he gave is that the country in achieving democracy is still in its formative period. Many people don't have enough knowledge and understanding on how the principles of democracy work.
According to some members of the MP there is a chance that the government of Myanmar may legislate the PR system on the next parliamentary session.
Countries like Germany, France and United Kingdom have been in a democratic stage for more than half century while Burma is just starting, said Sai Ai Pao. They still lack familiarity on how to run an election the reason why he gives preference to the PR system but not at this time.
The SNDP recognized because of its famous party symbol "White Tiger" is enlisting young people who are educated, five in every township where the party is active and have them enrolled to finally compete with other political parties in preparation for the general elections in 2015, the report said.
