The government of Burma has introduced a recent political reform which was discussed last week which is the Proportional Representation (PR) Electoral System is replacing the present winners-take-all voting set-up, Asian Correspondent news reported.
The Union Election Commission held its meeting last April 8 with different political parties wanting the PR system. The context of this PR system is that the number of seats won by a party is proportional to the number of votes received.
According to Tin Aye, Chairman of the Union Election Commission the proposal for this matter must be passed to the parliament and must be subjected for approval before the end of year 2013.
Parties supporting the new system are The National Union Party and Unity and Peace party. Majority of the ethnic minority parties are in favor of the PR system but some of them said they are happy with the way things are turning with the current system.
Aung San SuuKyi's party The National League for Democracy and the Inn National Development Party protected the current system which they think is most appropriate for the country for the time being, the report said.
According to Rakhine National Development Party revealed that the introduction of the new electoral system to country is too premature since the country is at the early stage of transition towards democracy.
