62 people killed and over 200 injured in fire at refugees camp

A fire broke out at a refugee camp in northern Thailand with 62 dead Myanmar refugees while injuring around 200 people. Officials are alarmed that death toll could still go up, Canada India report said.

Another fire broke out in Mae Surin refugee camp located in Mae Hong Son province last night killing around thirty refugees. However as search is going on, they have discovered thirty two more bodies in the burnt camp.

According to Mae Hong Son Public Health Office Paisarn Thanyawinitchakul, suffocation is the major cause of their death and over 200 people were injured. More than 3,000 refugees identified mostly from Karen ethnic minority group stays at the camp near the Myanmar border on Thailand. About100,000 refugees have left their place because of the clashes between the Karen rebels and the government.

Report disclosed that unattended cooking caused the fire that destroyed hundreds of huts made up of bamboo before it was put under control this morning.

A senior national intelligence official claimed that most of the victims who were killed in the fire were children, women and elderly, the report said.
