Google head urges Myanmar people to keep government out of internet control

Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt disclosed on Friday that he is advising the government of Myanmar to stay out of the internet transaction and allow private businesses to work on the telecommunications infrastructure stressing that constructive competition is important as well as to exercise freedom of speech, said news report from AP.

Group of students at a technical university in Yangon applauded the chairman with his encouraging statement. He added that the answer to bad speech is more speech. If the line of communication is open, more voices will be heard. If you are a political leader you get the opportunity to learn and find out what your citizens are thinking about.

Improving access to information through its search, translation and mapping applications in Myanmar is the major priority of Google, the report said.

At present gathering information about the country is what Google can do for the meantime, he said. Google recently launched a local homepage for the country, www.google.com.mm.
