Myanmar President Thein Sein met with Lt-Gen Yawdserk, Chairman of the Restoration Council of Shan State/Shan State Army in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday to discuss about peace negotiation, Eleven Media report said.
Yawdserk disclosed that his proposal to create a committee on peacekeeping was acknowledged by the president.
Part of their discussion includes on how to strengthen and cooperate in the peace process. Another topic they discussed is the importance of democracy for the people and for the country. No agreement has been signed yet.
The President said both sides were born within the same Union, which belongs to Shan nationals as well as to him and his party. The government wanted to seek a new political path that ensures political tolerance and dialogue and put a stop on the past issues and differences.
He further added that if peace prevails in all the regions, the government will ask all the ethnic armed groups to meet in Nay Pyi Taw or somewhere appropriate to sign a total ceasefire truce.
About 50 hostilities and conflicts have occurred since the RCSS-SSA and the government signed the ceasefire agreement on January 17 of last year. Many believed that the root cause of the clashes between these two parties is that they don’t trust each other.
The poppy cultivation increasing in Shan state is one of the concerns of the country. Only when the Shan nationals will be given alternatives to improve their economy chances are the rate of poppy cultivation will be lessened.
Meanwhile he further said that the military forces plays a significant role in attaining peace and any form of tyranny can cause the efforts to collapse. Since peace negotiations are well properly discussed, it’s high time for the constitution to be amended and approved by the entire people, the report said.
He was told by the President that his government is working hard to establish a true and genuine Union. But this job is tough, he alone cannot do it. He needs the cooperation and support of the whole populace to achieve a democracy.
