Thein Sein rejects Suu Kyi's demand on 2008 constitutional amendment

President Thein Sein refused to give in to the demand of democratic icon Aung San Suu Kyi to use his power in opening a way to take the highest government position in the country, said news report from ABC.

Furthermore during the ABC interview with the president, he expressed recognition on the plan of SuuKyi to run as president in the coming election but it is not for him to decide since the parliament will decide whether the constitution will be amended or not.

He added that the constitution was written with the people approving it. If in case the parliament approves for the amendment and the majority of the people agrees that she will be the next President of the country, so be it.

During the World Economic Forum East Asia, a gathering of global business and government leaders in the Myanmar capital, Naypyidaw, Ms Suu Kyi expressed her high-profile demand to the government.

Ms. SuuKyi said that it is very important for the constitution to be amended for her to be able to hold the presidency post.

During the by-elections last year, National League for Democracy party victoriously won in that election. However the 2008 constitution states that anyone is not allowed to hold office if their children are born in foreign lands and this greatly affects the candidacy of Ms.SuuKyi whose children are of British national.

Most Burmese people are led to believe that the provisions in the constitution were intended to stop her from vying for the highest position in the land.

For the constitution to be amended, it needs 75% majority in the Myanmar parliament wherein one quarter of the seats belongs to the military, the report said.

Moreover he disclosed that he has no power over the parliament since it already comprises the three main pillars such as the legislative branch, executive branch and the judicial branch.
