Democratic icon and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi met with various ethnic leaders yesterday in her residence to talk about the amendment of the 2008 Constitution and the creation of federal government, said news report from Eleven Media.
The discussion were participated by different members of the United Nationalities Alliance (UNA) and it took them about one and half hours to discuss things. Issues and concern that were discussed includes the amendment of the Constitution, the establishment of federal system of government and regional autonomy. Nevertheless, many expressed their doubts and disbelief on how to attain all these subject of concern.
Aye Tha Aung, Chairman of the Rakhine League for Democracy disclosed that putting up a federal system in the country will take some time and changes cannot be immediately felt.
Other participants who were in the meeting include Pu Kyint Shin Htan of the Zome Democracy Federation, Naing Ngwe Thein of the Mon Democracy Party, Saw Harry of the Kayin National Democracy Federation and Khun Htun Oo of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy.
Suu Kyi who is the chairperson of the National League for Democracy stressed the role of the army and its 25 percent hold on Parliament saying that some of the articles in the 2008 Constitution were not proper and needs to be amended in Parliament, the report said.
