Suu Kyi criticizes the proposal of women barred to marry Muslim men

A proposal was made by Buddhist monks to restrict interfaith marriage to which democratic leader Aung San SuuKyi criticized the draft. She said that this proposal is treating women unjustly and this is violating their human rights, said news report from DPA.

Mandalay-based Buddhist monk Wirathu who is very prominent launched the 969 movement early this year and addressed all Buddhists to stay away from shops owned by Muslim. He set a meeting for monks to be held on June 27 to discuss about his proposed law and to get support from them.

Campaign signatures of about 300,000 are being worked out to support his draft after which to be passed to parliament.

Part of the law states that any Buddhist woman wishing to marry a Muslim is required to ask her parents' permission as well as the local government officials; while for a Muslim man marrying a Buddhist woman is required to convert to Buddhism, the main religion in Myanmar.

Punishment would be imposed if anyone is found out to be violating the law such as their property will be confiscated and would be sentenced to 10 years in prison.

However, last Monday eight women's groups came out and opposed the legislation saying that it is biased and unfair, the report said.
