The government of Thailand requested the Myanmar authorities if they can display its white elephants in commemoration of its 65 years diplomatic ties with Myanmar next year. However, their request was not granted by the Myanmar government, said news report from Deutsche Presse Agentur.
Earlier this month, Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichukchaikul asked Myanmar Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin for the pachyderm to be housed at Chiang Mai Zoo.
According to the statement posted in the president’s official website, Myanmar’s Foreign Minister told Surapong that it would not be easy to be transporting the white elephant to Chiang Mai.
The government of Myanmar said that they are making special flights for people in Chiang Mai to come and see the white elephants in the country.
So far there are eight white elephants in captivity, three in Naypyitaw Zoo and five in Yangon Zoo.
Capturing white elephant is considered to bring good fortune in the ancient kingdoms of Myanmar and Thailand, and a monarch’s power was partly measured by the number of albino elephants he owns, as claimed by the government of Thailand, the report said.
