Government grants a Special Economic Zone in Muse, Shan State

An announcement was made during the joint shareholder meeting between New Star Light and Myanmar construction companies Great Hawkham Public New held on June 15 that there will be a development of a 288-acre Special Economic Zone in Muse, Shan State, said news report from Mizzima.

This newly planned urban project is intended to make the increasing transport and infrastructure demands of the growing gateway city much easier. It is likely to sit on the bank of the Shweli River directly facing the Chinese border.

Construction of cargo yards and traffic detours are among the planned project so as to ease the overcrowding of cargo vehicles.

The amount of fund for the project and the timeframe for its completion has not yet been determined. On the other hand, the land preparation and the construction of roads will immediately begin, according to a spokesperson of the company.

To date, the town is considered a centre for major export points of the country's agricultural trade resources, consumer goods and construction materials.

In January alone a US$189 million in cross-border trade was recorded. Barely last week Muse-Nant Khan Traders Association estimated that 2,000 tons of Myanmar rice was now crossing into China via Muse per day.

With this project, the company is very confident that it could answer the growing demand of trade at Muse's, Mizzima news reported.

Win Myint, Commerce Minister disclosed that the development of the area is very important. Once it is neglected it would surely show signs of unsuccessful economic development for the country.
