Police authorities enforced a curfew since shops and two Islamic religious buildings were also included in the fire.
According to a report, Nay Win, aged 48, ran after Aye Aye Win, 24, and doused her with fuel. People who witnessed the incident inflicted physical harm to the suspect and he was immediately arrested by the police.
Nay Win who is an Indian-Chinese man is of Islamic faith while Aye Aye Win who is a Chinese-Myanmar woman is of Buddhist faith.
Both the victim and the suspect don’t know each other since the latter lives in Kengtung and he just arrived in Lashio three days ago. He was billeted in a hotel.
Aye Aye Win is being treated at Lashio People’s Hospital for burns in her legs, hands and hair.
According to the report from an official of Shan State Police Force, two stimulant tablets were taken from the pocket of the suspect’s trousers. The victims’ father has filed a case against the suspect.
The victim’s relatives about 5 of them together with 10 Buddhist monks went to the police station at 7pm protesting since the suspect were taken out of the police station. The number of people increased to 30.
Nay Win was accused and charged of attempted murder, illegal possession of drug and arson attack by the Lashio Police Station.
A mosque near Lashio Myoma market and an Islamic school located on Lanmadaw Road was set on fire at 7:00 pm by fuming residents which spread rapidly hitting 15 shops near the school. The fire was put out by 11:00 in the evening.
The mob outside the police station and all over the city were controlled by the authorities at around 8:30 pm. Section 144 of the Penal Code has been imposed in Lashio since 9:30 pm last night, Eleven Media news reported.
