Chin leader: No federalism principles in 2008 constitution

The 2008 constitution of Myanmar has been a center of criticism by Zomi Democracy League party chairman Pu Chin Sian Thang for disregarding the Federal principles during a workshop held in Yangon, said news report from Eleven Media.

He pointed out that the continuous clash between the various ethnic groups and the government cannot be solved if the present constitution ignores a federal law.

In the 2008 constitution there are instances where federal principle is not applied. One is under the title' Basic Principles' the constitution it did not agree on a federal principle that many ethnic groups have requested.

He further added that the constitution was written without proper consultation to the people. He stressed that federal principle was not included maybe because those who authored the constitution has intentions of not really putting it just like their adviser General Ne Win who was responsible for grabbing power in a military coup in year 1962.

Moreover, majority of the people considers the federal system as their means to stay a happy life and attain peace under democratic rule.

Organizing the workshop for amending the constitutions are groups of former political prisoners and it was held six times. On June 15, the 7th workshop will be headed by New Mon State Party.
