Shan in Kachin State protest for being ignored in peace talk

Local Shan residents protested against the delegates of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) as they were returning from the peace conference held in  Myitkyina to the Laiza Headquarters in Myanmar's northern state of Kachin, said news report from Eleven Media.

Protestors numbering about 200 were dressed in their traditional costume were holding posters in Waimaw as the KIO delegation passed by.

A resident from Khatcho village named Sai Tin Hlaing, aged 60-years old revealed that during 1994, Myanmar soldiers arrested local residents to work as porters. On the other hand KIA (Kachin Independence Army), the armed group of KIO enlists local people and forced them to collect taxes. After year 2011 the soldiers stopped their illegal activities but the KIA went on recruiting and still collects taxes.

Moreover he said that they do not hate anyone. However any armed group that will treat them unfairly and unjustly is not acceptable to them.

He further added that all they wanted is to continuously deal with the problems on ethnic nationals that were arrested and that the government and the KIO will keep on discussing the ceasefire agreements.

For many years, Shan and Kachin nationals have been staying together in Kachin state. Policies were established regarding their co-existence, the report said.

With the peace conference that occurred between the KIO and the government in Myitkyina, Kachin state last May 28 to May 30, the Shan nationals who are residing in Kachin state have expressed their disappointment since they were not given the chance to be included in the peace discussion.
