KIO and government peace talks postponed due to China’s interfere

The supposed peace talks between the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) and the government did not push thru because the Chinese government opposed to it, said news report from Eleven Media.

Win Tun, Union Minister for Environmental Conservation and Forestry informed the Radio Free Asia (RFA) last Friday during a tour of European countries as a member of the government's union level peace working committee.

According to Win Tun, the government of China is hesitant to invite representatives from the US, Britain and the United Nations to participate in the discussion. Displaying of unwillingness by China is more on the Kachin side and not to the government.

The Minister further said that representatives from the West are welcome. Media and social organizations in the country are allowed.

The statement issued on April 6 stated that the point in paragraph 3 (A) in last month's joint statement in Ruili was deleted as it was objected by China.

The important part put emphasis on having reliable countries to serve as witnesses in coordinating ceasefire measures and ensuring mutual trust and respect for the emergence of genuine political dialogues, the report said.
