“Kayan Beauties” Human Trafficking film wins the award

The “Kayan Beauties”, a Burmese film was recognized and honored during the ASEAN International Film Festival inauguration held in Malaysia bagging the jury award, said news report from Irrawaddy.

Aung Ko Latt, a Burmese film director disclosed that the film is based on a true to life story of an ethnic Kayan girl from east Burma who is kidnapped by human traffickers, remarkably depicting conditions among women in the ethnic group who are often targeted by Thai photographers or tourist companies because of their reputation for wearing brass coils that appear to elongate their necks.

He further said that for 27 years of his life, he has been doing Burmese films and movies for the world to see. Now that his dreams has come into a realization, he will do his very best to come up with movies representing the tradition, culture and the beauty of his country.

The main goal for creating this film is to make people aware that indeed human trafficking do exists and they are mostly the victims. It is significantly important that the rights of the Kayan tribes be protected and taken care of.

For some tourists in Thailand they also refer to the Kayan tribes as “giraffe people”, the report said.
He further stressed that Kayan people are the hill tribes of Burma and not of Thailand. These people are usually get trafficked across the Thai-Burma border and he doesn’t want them to be the showcase of another nation.
