The northern Shan Farmer Committee has filed a petition last April 5 to the Chief Minister of the government of Shan State to stop the upcoming Shwe gas pipeline project which will take full operation soon. Among their main concern are the health, safety and security of the people in the region, said news report from SHAN.
Shan Farmer Committee comprises 14-members with over 10,000 farmer members urging the government to take into consideration the welfare and interests of the locals. Not only the locals but various civil society organizations have expressed their disappointment and complaints on this 800 km long pipelines construction but their voices were ignored and disregarded.
They further disclosed that from the first day of the construction of the pipeline project, they were not invited for any public conversation, were not also given any information dissemination about the project or the advantage or disadvantage that it may bring to the locals and to the farmers.
The farmers were also compensated in small amounts. They filed compensations over damages incurred by the construction of Shwe gas pipeline passing across northern Shan State".
According to locals, by the month of May 2013 oil and gas will be passing through their locality. One thing more the pipes were poorly connected to one another.
In the event that the pipeline is damaged there will be high risk of gas leaking which will endanger the life and safety of the people, SHAN news reported. Original source: http://www.betweenonline.com/2013/04/09/farmers-in-shan-state-urge-government-to-stop-gas-pipeline/
