Myanmar’s state-owned newspaper seeks foreign and local partners

The state-owned New Light of Myanmar newspaper is in search for a joint business venture as it set up for competition. It has been years that the newspaper held control on Myanmar’s English-language daily press, according to news reported from AP.

The Ministry of Information has published in the state-owned newspaper that foreign and local partners have expressed their willingness and enthusiasm for joint venture operation of the publication. Moreover, the newspaper is viewed as a dull government mouthpiece.

To date 8 newspapers were authorized to print editions everyday that will begin next month. This is considered the very first since 1964.

Myanmar President Thein Sein has considerably relaxed media controls since taking power in 2011.

Censorship was lifted in August last year, giving reporters the opportunity to print material which too many is unimaginable during the time of the military ruling junta, the report said.
